PHYLISS Chater has received a telegram from the Queen after celebrating her 100th birthday.

Her family travelled from as far as Australia to be with Phyliss on her big day at Springbank House Care Home, in Chesterfield.

She only moved into the care home in April 2017, having previously lived with her sister, Mavis Mehta, in Chesterfield, until the age of 99.

Mavis, who attended the celebration, said: “The home has transformed Phyliss’s life.

“She was getting very frail but, since moving into Springbank House, she doesn’t even use a zimmer frame to walk anymore.

“She has also put on weight thanks to the wonderful care she has had at the home.”

Phyliss was born and grew up in Penang, Malaysia, where she eventually worked as a clerk after leaving school.

In 1956, she moved to the UK with Mavis, while her other two siblings, Dudley and Lorna, moved to Australia.

Phyliss has one daughter, Lynette Travers, who lives in Perth, Australia. She travelled to the Chesterfield care home to celebrate her mother’s birthday.

She also has two grandchildren, Alison and Sean, and three great grandchildren.

Karen Busby, home manager at Springbank House Care Home, on Ashgate Road, said: “The staff are delighted to celebrate Phyliss’s 100th birthday alongside her family and friends.

“She has only been with us since April, when she was 99, which is incredible, but she is loved by everyone at the home. She is a wonderful character and has made great friends among the staff and her fellow residents.

“We’re delighted Phyliss’s family could be here to mark her 100th birthday, including her sister Mavis, who regularly visits, and her daughter Lynette, who came all the way from Australia.”
