OVER £300 has been raised to support those with cancer with coffee morning events across Teesside.

Half a dozen homes in the region have been fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support as part of the charity’s annual World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

In Eston, the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland Billy Wells officially opened an event at Eston Leisure Centre, organised in conjunction with Briarwood Care Home, on Normanby Road.

Tea and cakes were served to residents, family members, friends and other visitors, whose donations helped the home to raise over £160.

Mark Culley, home manager at Briarwood Care Home, said: “We’d like to say a massive thank you to Mayor Billy Wells for officially opening our Macmillan Coffee Morning.

“Thank you to all those who came along and supported the event also, helping us to raise a fantastic amount for this vital charity.”

At St Francis Church Hall, on Barwick Way, Ingleby Barwick, half a dozen Hill Care Group homes came together to host a coffee afternoon.

Each home donated a hamper for a raffle, which included candles, gourmet food and drink, chocolates and more.

A homemade cake in tribute to Hill Care’s ongoing support of Macmillan was baked and raffled by Sarah Robinson, activities coordinator at Mandale House Care Home, on Green Lane, Newtown.

The cake was won by Norma Dobie, activities coordinator at Briarwood Care Home, who took it back to the home to share with residents.

The event, which also saw several rounds of bingo and homemade cakes served with tea, raised £145 for Macmillan.

Edna Cook, a resident at The Beeches Care Home, said: “It’s been a great afternoon. It’s lovely to meet new people and help raise money for such a good cause.”

Phyllis Paylor, a member of the MFC Foundation and a Macmillan volunteer, was also among the visitors at the event.

She said: “The events around the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning are about more than raising money, they’re for people to get together and enjoy one another’s company and make new friends.

“Thanks to Hill Care for organising these events every year.”
