YOUNG and elderly have been finding their Funky Feet during exercise sessions at several Teesside care homes.

Beanbags, hula-hoops and music have had both children and residents taking part in physical activities to improve their fitness.

The Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council scheme has seen sessions take place at Hill Care Group homes across the region.

Called Funky Feet, the scheme aims to promote the importance of physical activity for young children as well as develop fundamental skills.

Activities have been held at Ingleby Care Home, Ingleby Barwick, Mandale House Care Home, Thornaby, and The Beeches Care Home, Stockton-on-Tees.

At The Beeches, over 20 residents joined more than a dozen children in balancing beanbags on their heads while moving around and negotiating obstacles.

Jess Brown, home manager at The Beeches Care Home, said: “After the session, the residents were all in high spirits.

“One resident seemed to enjoy the session that much she continued to sing and dance for the rest of the day.

“Staff members who took part said it was lovely to spend quality time with them. One member of staff said they enjoyed seeing the residents interacting with the children.”

Elizabeth Rafferty, who lives at The Beeches Care Home, said: “It was wonderful to dance with the children. I felt uplifted for the rest of the day.”

After a session at Ingleby Care Home, resident John Hines said: “It was great moving about alongside the children. They have so much energy.”

Mandale House Care Home resident Maureen Percival said: “The children are so clever.”

Funky Feet is based in Stockton-on-Tees and delivers sessions across the North East and North Yorkshire.

There are currently dozens of sessions taking place each week for children aged two to six years of age.
