Key workers treated to a superhero’s welcome

NATIONAL Superhero Day saw a Tyneside care home celebrating their local heroes – instead of Iron Man, Captain America, and the rest of The Avengers.

The opportunity was taken to roll out a hero’s welcome for key workers by staff and residents at Willowdene Care Home, on Victoria Road West, in Hebburn.

Northumbria Blood Bikes rider Richard Hooper was the first to visit on the day and was greeted outside by a welcoming committee of resident bike enthusiasts.

John Moule, 78, who lives at Willowdene Care Home, was impressed by Richard’s Yamaha and discussed all the old bikes he had ridden in his younger days.

Margaret Branch, 90, also spoke about her motorbike riding days. She said: “I only had brothers and it seemed only right to be able to keep up with them.”

Traffic officer Thomas Wade also dropped by in his patrol car, impressing residents with the flashing lights.

Barbara Berry, 81, said: “It is quite exciting. Imagine being in a high-speed car chase.”

Margaret added: “I do like a man in uniform and he’s got flashy lights, but I hope he stays safe as it sounds like a very dangerous job.”

Later in the day, fire fighters from Hebburn Fire Station brought their fire engine for residents to have a look around.

Each visitor was presented with a gift and card as a token of gratitude from the care home’s residents and staff for the vital work they do.

Chris Hogan-Hind, home manager at Willowdene Care Home, said: “When we heard National Superhero Day was coming up we thought it would be a great opportunity to celebrate our local heroes.

“The residents and staff were all thrilled when the visitors arrived and were delighted to present them with a small gift and a card as a token of our thanks.

“They all carry out vital services and it was the least we can do.”
