School children learn about dementia from Champion

SCHOOL children have been learning about life with dementia from a Dementia Friends Champion.

More than 35 pupils at St Aiden’s C of E Academy, in Skelmanthorpe, near Huddersfield, were given an insight into the degenerative condition and how they can support those affected.

Iain Lodge, an activities coordinator at Longroyds & Pilling House Care Home, also in Skelmanthorpe, has been running similar sessions for over a year and a half.

He talked about the frustration someone with dementia might be feeling when struggling to get dressed or make a cup of tea.

He said: “I started this over a year and a half ago and wanted to spread the word about not being afraid of people with dementia, as they can live a normal life with a bit of help from young to old.

“In the past year, I have also talked at a scout group and church group, among others.

“It’s not only teaching children about dementia but adults too. The more we can spread the word about helping them the more people will find it easier to accept people with dementia.”

After the session, the school pupils were all made Dementia Friends, an Alzheimer’s Society initiative to change perceptions of dementia.

Iain added: “There was lots of listening and involvement with the children. They were very interested and hopefully it will strengthen the home’s relationship with the school.

“They visit the home every month for a variety of activities with the residents and it has proved hugely beneficial for both groups.”
