FLOWERS, plants, compost and pots have been flooding into a Teesside care home during National Gardening Week.

An appeal put on social media by Rebekah Jennings, activities coordinator at The Beeches Care Home, on Green Lane, Newtown, Stockton-on-Tees, saw dozens of donations from members of the community.

After posting on Facebook community pages “Teesside Help” and “Thornaby Alert”, a wide variety of plants and flowers started being given to the home.

Shaun’s Flowers and Plants delivered lots of seedlings and compost, the district nurse team donated plants, as did community members Vicky Simpson, Clare Brown Dunn, Jamie Marshall, Beth Parkinson and Karen Herman.

Residents at The Beeches Care Home have been making the most of recent sunny weather to enjoy the garden and make the most of the donations.

Activities coordinator Rebekah said: “The residents have had the most wonderful week out in the glorious sun and reminiscing about how they loved gardening in their own homes.

“They even taught me some tips and tricks. In particular, Derek Mason and Rita Armstrong, who are possibly the greenest fingered people I have ever met.

“Wilf Birbeck has been appointed as our chief groundsman and is out every morning to water the plants, especially the sunflowers, which we now have 13 to take care of. We can’t wait to see them grow.”

Wilf said: “Its lovely to be out, working in the garden like I always used to.”

Jacqueline Rudd, home manager at The Beeches Care Home, said: “We have been absolutely overwhelmed with the generosity of our local community who have donated countless flowers, plants, compost and plant pots. We also had a huge donation of indoor plants and flowers from our fantastic district nurses.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated and made National Gardening Week a really special occasion for our residents.”
