SHOEBOXES full of gifts have been given to elderly patients who will be spending Christmas in hospital.

Socks, scarves, hats, toiletries, sweets, chocolates and more were collected by staff at Deangate Care Home for Barnsley Hospital Charity.

The items filled 14 shoeboxes, which have been wrapped in Christmas paper.

They will be distributed to elderly patients who do not have family or friends to celebrate with on Christmas day.

Dawn Paley, home manager at Deangate Care Home, on Towngate, Mapplewell, Barnsley, said: “Barnsley Hospital provides a vital service, including to many of our residents, and we are always looking for ways to lend our support.

“Christmas can be a lonely time for those with no family or friends and we wanted to ensure elderly patients had something to open over the festive holidays.

“We had a great response to our shoebox appeal and would like to thank everyone who donated.”

Lisa Calvert, charity development manager at Barnsley Hospital Charity, said: “It’s fantastic to receive these wonderful gift boxes.

“These are great as our staff on the wards can take a little peek to see which gift box will best suit each of their patients without having to unwrap and then re-wrap these presents.

“Some of our elderly patients won’t have many, if any, visitors whilst in hospital this Christmas and this will let them know they are in peoples’ thoughts in the holidays and help bring them some festive cheer.”
