ELDERLY care home residents have been raising funds for the fight against dementia with a sponsored walk.

The Gables Care Home in Middlesbrough, held a memory walk in support of the Alzheimer’s Society, which has seen over 100,000 take part in similar walks around the country this year.

Six residents and their family members were joined by staff in the stroll from the care home, on Highfield Road, to Albert Park and back.

They were also joined by former resident Jim Strickland and his wife Val, who continues to the support the home after his stay for respite care.

The three kilometre walk raised over £100 for the charity.

Cath Taylor, Activities Coordinator at The Gables Care Home, said: “It was a lovely walk and we all felt we had done something positive to help this worthy cause.

“Working with people who have dementia can be very rewarding but it’s so important we continue to look for a cure or at least a way to slow down the disease.

“Raising funds for The Alzheimer’s Society means they can fund further research and, one day, find a way to help those who are affected by dementia.”
