Birds welcomed to stay at Huddersfield care home

BIRDS are being welcomed to a Huddersfield care home as residents take part in the RSPB’s Feed the Birds Day.

Residents at Aden Lodge Care Home, on Long Lane, Clayton West, have built and decorated birdboxes for their garden as part of the avian event.

They have also been leaving seed out for their feathered visitors to encourage them to make their nests.

Feed the Birds Day was launched by the RSPB to encourage everyone to support their garden birds and to celebrate the importance of wild birds to the ecosystem.

Birdwatching has also proven highly therapeutic for residents at Aden Lodge Care Home, according to home manager Jessica Hibbins.

She said: “We actively encourage our residents to take part in activities that they can enjoy year-round, both inside and out. Contact with nature can promote wellbeing and activate memories.

“Bird watching is a great reminiscence activity, as bird song and different species can bring back long-forgotten memories. It can also promote calm and reduce anxiety as it’s such a calm and peaceful way to spend time.

“Two of our residents, Eunice and Margaret, expressed how lovely it was to make the bird boxes.

“Margaret stated she used to have a large bird table at home, and would spend hours mesmerised by the birds it attracted. Eunice said she’d love to see some robins in the homes garden as it reminds her of Christmas, which is just round the corner.

“They can’t wait to watch the birds visiting the garden and see which different species they can spot.

“They will be welcoming plenty of feathered friends to the fabulous birdhouses they made in no time. I think they would brighten any gloomy day.”
