A ROYAL celebration was held at a Barnsley care home to mark the 70th wedding anniversary of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh.

Deangate Care Home, in Mapplewell, joined the rest of the country in congratulating the royals on their seven decades of marriage.

The home was decorated with bunting, flags and images of the Queen and Duke.

The residents and their family members enjoyed high tea, with sandwiches, cakes and scones.

The day was also spent looking back at old black and white film of the Queen and Duke on their wedding day.

The reminiscence activity brought back happy memories for many residents, who recalled where they were and what they were doing in November 1947.

Julia Chambers, home manager of Deangate Care Home, on Parkgate, said: “The Queen and Duke’s wedding anniversary was a great occasion to celebrate for our residents.

“They are great supporters of the monarchy and particularly Queen Elizabeth, who has been on the throne for most of their lives.

“They enjoyed recalling the many milestones of her reign, from the wedding in 1947 and her coronation in 1953 all the way through to her 90th birthday last year.

“Everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable day.”
